I also would like to clarify that, though the Puritans owe much to St. Augustine, he was evidently not the only influence in their theology and lifestyle.Christinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17971674088814672391noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234314881468242887.post-69481900759461781142010-09-29T19:32:46.799-07:002010-09-29T19:32:46.799-07:00Christine, thank you again for a well-written and ...Christine, thank you again for a well-written and stimulating post about the intellectual roots of Puritanism. It is possible that Hambrick-Stowe derived his Augustine connection from Miller's work, but there are many other possibilities. The influence of Augustine on Protestantism is well-known, and has been written about by many, including people like B.B. Warfield, who wrote before Miller, who himself used earlier sources like the historical theologies of George Fisher and Arthur McGiffert that were available to others as well. Calvin quoted from Augustine more than any other uninspired author in the Institutes and subsequent Calvinists has often relied on him as well. Augustine has been called perhaps the most influential Christian thinker after St. Paul; that he influenced the Puritans both in America and England was only to be expected when they followed in Calvin's footsteps.Henryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09508077119805080217noreply@blogger.com
